Former Wild Forward Demitra Among 43 Killed In Crash

A Russian Jet carrying Kontinental Hockey League team Lokomotiv crashed this morning while taking off.  The plane was unable to gain any altitude and crashed into a river bank just minutes after take off.

Former Minnesota Wild forward Pavol Demitra was among the 43 that were killed. Two others still remain in critical condition.

Demitra ,36, was a member of the Wild from 2006-08.  He was a good friend of long-time Wild and current New York Ranger Marion Gaborik. Demitra last played in the NHL during the 2009-10 season as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.  He made 3 appearances in the NHL All-Star Game during his career.

The plane was leaving Yaroslavl and heading to Minsk. The team was set to open the 2011 season Thursday in Minsk.

Other top names on the team include Russian defensemen Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins, and Swedish goalie Stefan Liv.
