Wisconsin Report Shows Challenges For Rural Schools

A new report outlines significant challenges facing Wisconsin’s rural schools.

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance report released last week shows that Wisconsin’s rural schools have an average of nearly eight students per square mile compared with 47 for others in the state.

That results in higher transportation costs for those rural districts, taking up money that could be spent elsewhere by the schools.

The report details severe enrollment declines that comes as student populations are increasing elsewhere in Wisconsin.

The report says with relatively few students and higher per student costs, rural districts have a hard time maintaining efficient class sizes.
