Steele, Karstens To Receive Awards At Isanti County Fair
Elwood “Woody” Steele, (73) and Shirley Karstens will receive the 2011 Outstanding Senior Citizen Award at the Isanti County Fair for helping their community. The two will then represent the county at the “Outstanding Seniors” celebration at the State Fair at the end of August.
Steele and Karstens will be honored at Thursday’s Isanti County Fair “Senior Day” during the 1-4 p.m. program at the bandshell. The two will then represent the county at the “Outstanding Seniors” celebration at the State Fair at the end of August.
The Isanti County News reports that Steele has done volunteer work with Habitat For Humanity, various maintenance projects, has served as a Confirmation mentor and helps with the Interfaith Hospitality Network at his Cambridge United Methodist Church. He is part of the Isanti Happy Seniors where he helps arrange programs, along with lunches and clean-ups. At the Senior Activity Center (SACS) in Cambridge, Steele helps serve breakfast and lunches, along with helping clean up afterward and performing more jobs at the center.
The Isanti County News reports that Karstens has volunteered in various roles at Cambridge Medical Center, and has logged over 4,000 hours over a 10-year period. She has also spent 44 years volunteering with Relay for Life; over 500 hours over a 10-year period (1980-90) with the Cambridge Senior Activity Center; eight years with the SAC’s Red Hatters club, and three years with Isanti County Commission on Aging.
WCMP will also be broadcasting live at the Isanti County Fair both Thursday and Friday from 2-5pm.
