A daycare provider has been charged with murder in the death of an 8-month-old baby in January.

The Lindstrom daycare provider, 42-year-old Salli Deen Schultz, was charged in Chisago County with second degree murder while committing assault in the death of Brooke Elizabeth Kowarsch.

According to the charges, Schultz told investigators that Kowarsch seemed lethargic when she got up from her nap at Schultz’s daycare. Kowarsch had suffered a head injury while at the daycare, and a CT scan showed bleeding in her brain. The accident happened on January 19 and Kowarsch later died on January 23 from her injuries.

Along with the murder charges, Schultz is being charged with operating a non-residential daycare without a license.

Schultz appeared in Chisago County District Court on Friday. She was released after posting a $100,000 bail. Schultz’s defense attorney Earl Gray says she will plead not guilty. Her next scheduled court appearance is August 10.
