Mauer To Play Exhibition Game This Week
Joe Mauer’s long recovery process is scheduled to take another step forward this week, when the Minnesota Twins’ All-Star catcher plays in an extended spring training game in Florida.
Mauer hasn’t played since April 12 because of a variety of ailments and officially remains on the disabled list with ‘bilateral leg weakness.’ He traveled to the Twins’ facility in Fort Myers, Fla., to try to work himself back into playing shape.
“He’s doing a lot of running, ran the bases and everything’s going good,” manager Ron Gardenhire told 1500 ESPN on Sunday morning. “He still had a little bit of the soreness in his arm, and that’s just from — he’s throwing, doing all the throwing and stuff like that. The plan is for him Monday or Tuesday to get into a game, start out as a DH and then you work your way into the rest of it.”
Mauer has battled knee, shoulder and elbow injuries this season, and much like Justin Morneau last season, the Twins have been very cautious with him.
