Saturday, May 14th, 2011 at 6:15 pm

Former Minnesota Wild hockey player Derek Boogaard (28) was found dead in his apartment in Minneapolis last night. Police Sargent Bill Palmer said authorities got a call just after 6pm on Friday about a male unconscious and not breathing. When authorities arrived they pronounced Boogaard dead at the scene.

He spent five seasons with the Wild before signing a four-year contract with the New York Rangers last season. He played in 22 games for the Rangers last year before missing the final 52 games with a concussion and shoulder injury.

According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, it will take about two weeks before they will find an official cause of death. A memorial service to honor Boogaard has been planned for Sunday night from 6 to 9 p.m. outside Gate 1 at theĀ Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
