Former Wild Player Found Dead On Friday
Former Minnesota Wild hockey player Derek Boogaard (28) was found dead in his apartment in Minneapolis last night. Police Sargent Bill Palmer said authorities got a call just after 6pm on Friday about a male unconscious and not breathing. When authorities arrived they pronounced Boogaard dead at the scene.
He spent five seasons with the Wild before signing a four-year contract with the New York Rangers last season. He played in 22 games for the Rangers last year before missing the final 52 games with a concussion and shoulder injury.
According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, it will take about two weeks before they will find an official cause of death. A memorial service to honor Boogaard has been planned for Sunday night from 6 to 9 p.m. outside Gate 1 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
