Brenda Halstead of Mora was announced as the winner of WCMP’s Queen for the day package….awarded on-air on Friday May 6.

The following letter was submitted by Brenda’s daughter, and was selected as the winner:

“My name is Amanda Norton. I would like to nominate my mom Brenda Halstead for “Queen for a Day”.

My reason for nominating my mom for this starts all the way back when I was just 8 years old. I am now 22. When I was 8 I was diagnosed with a rare cancer that should have claimed my life. My mom stood by me everyday for a year. She learned how to give me shots and anything else she could so I could spend time at home as much as possible. She drove me back and forth from Mora, MN to the University of Minnesota two to three time a week for over a year, when I would become more and more ill.

My mom was a single parent with two children who did what she could to protect us and provide for us. Going back to school and working multiple jobs to keep us fed and keep a roof over our head.

My mom has been an active member of our community for the past almost 6 years doing the Relay For Life for the American cancer society, which she is now head of chair for our county.

My grandparents (my mom’s parents) have both become very ill in there elderly age and can no longer live on their own, so they were separated for quite some time. My mom could see how heartbroken they both were, and soon after, started looking into moving them closer to us so they could be together again (which is something I know we can’t afford but my mom was going to make it happen).
I have been without a car for sometime now and I live 25 miles from my employment. My mom has given me multiple rides to and from work with not so much as a sigh about it. Whether its at 8:30am or 4pm. She’s always right there.

I often become very overwhelmed with some of the things that are going on in my life. Every time I go to my mom with a problem, she always, always brings my spirits up and give my an alternative way of viewing my problems.

She is not only my mom and mentor she’s my best friend. She has 4 children: 22, 20, 5, and a year-and-a-half years old. Having the younger children at home and a full time job, and all her extra things she does for other people, she never has time for herself. She has never, in my 22 years of life, taken time out to spoil or pamper herself.

I just want to show her how much I appreciate who she is and how much i love her! I know my mom would be so shocked and happy to win your “Queen for a Day” contest, and would appreciate it so much.
Thank You for taking the time to read my letter and I really hope you consider my mom for Queen for a Day because she deserves it so much!”

Congratulations to Brenda, she won an awesome package of prizes!
