Wildfire Prevention Week

Sunday, April 17th, 2011 at 8:27 am

Wildfire Prevention Week starts today in Minnesota. As the temperature warms up, more people will be getting outside and enjoying a nice bonfire. Having a fire can be a great time, as long as it doesn’t get out of control. DNR personnel respond to more than 1,500 wildfires every year. Wildfire prevention coordinator for the DNR, Larry Himanga, is encouraging people to make special efforts to control their fires all year long.

Most of the wildfires that occur in Minnesota happen during the spring time. The number one cause of wildfires is debris-burning fires that escape. Official wildfire prevention efforts in Minnesota began after the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894.
