Pine City Band Students Impress Again
Pine City band students continued another banner year with superior results at Solo/Small Ensemble Festival last week. 35 events were entered the contest, with 24 receiving “Superior,” the highest rating possible. Students played a variety of solos, duets, and larger ensembles, primarily comprising works by classical composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Vaughan Williams, and Offenbach.
The festival was adjudicated by Dave Weulander of Askov, who was impressed by the variety of entries and overall talent of the students. Weulander gave out his “Best in Site” Award to “Barcarolle” performed on the marimba by senior Josh Palmer. Other high scores went to Renee Schminkey (oboe solo), Emily Sjoblom (French horn solo), and a creative and fun duet by Trey Ritter and Nick Erickson entitled “Variations on an Annoyingly Familiar Tune” (trombone/bari sax duet). Pine City’s Jazz One also took part. The band received 38 out of a possible 40 points playing three songs. Junior Matt Gallik was recognized for his alto sax feature in the classic jazz chart “Misty.”
Students are judged on a variety of elements, including tone quality, intonation, technical skill, rhythmic accuracy, articulation, and musical expression. Students must score 35 out of 40 points to receive a Superior rating; events receiving 28 to 34 are rated as Excellent. All 35 events received either Excellent or Superior ratings.
The students were prepared under the direction of Bradley Mariska and Kevin Cahill. Administrative assistant for the day was Robyn Miche and Joni Nelson served as the piano accompanist. The band students will be performing their annual Pops Concert on Monday, May 2, featuring an all-Disney program.
