An Eau Claire man will be spending the next year in jail after his eighth drunken-driving conviction since 1991. The judge sentenced Christopher D. Raney to one year in prison, five years probation, he must complete drug court, and pay a $1,200 fine. His driver’s license is revoked for three years.

According to police, they stopped Raney early on July 5 for going 15mph over the speed limit. His speech was slow and he smelled of alcohol. Raney failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit to drive in Wisconsin.

“I’ve come to a point in my life where I really want to change,”  Raney told Judge Paul Lenz during his sentencing hearing Friday in Eau Claire County Court.

Raney has been previously convicted of drunken driving in Eau Claire County in December 1991, June 1995, three times in October 1997, and May 2006. He was convicted in September 1999 in Waukesha County.
