Sunday, February 13th, 2011 at 3:11 pm

On Sunday, Feb. 13, WCMP FM did live broadcasting at the 39th annual Mora Vasaloppet. Anchoring the coverage was Dan Hinrichs and Jesse Logan, and guests during the nearly five hours of coverage were many including, all of the first place finishers for both men and women, for the 42k (which began at 9 a.m.), the 35k and the longer 58k (which began simultaneously at 10 a.m.) We tried to capture as much video as we could. It was a great broadcast, and a wonderful day!

Watch the finish of the 58k, and see the winner presented his wreath!

Winning the Men’s 58k for a second consecutive season was 26-year old Matthew Liebsch from Orono. Here he is with Dan Hinrichs after the race. (Finishing second was Santiago Ocariz from Spooner, WI, Finishing third was Adam Swank of Duluth, MN)

Making it look easy in the Women’s 58k, the wreath wearer was 26-year old Johanna Winters, a woman from Minneapolis.

(Finishing second was Carolyn Bramante of Minneapolis, Finishing third was last year’s 58K winner Kristina Owen of Houghton, MI)

Watch the cannon blast to start the mornings first race – the 42k!!!

The first racers hit the course promptly at 9 a.m. and the winner of that 42k race was a man being called the “Russian Rocket” by many of his fellow skiers, Eugeny Beletskiy, a Russian man from Minneapolis. (Finishing second was Piotr Bednarski from Minneapolis, Third was last year’s 42k winner Evan Pengelly)

The rocket (skiing in light blue) soars to the finish!

For the women in the 42k, 19-year old Molly Watkins of Minneapolis repeated as a champion and was overcome with joy at the finish line. All listening enjoyed a beautiful radio interview. (Finishing second was Josie Nilsson of Medicine Lake, MN, Third was Jen Pearson of Plymouth, MN)

Repeating as the wreath wearer (and still wearing the wreath in the interview) for the 35k Men’s race was Nathan Porath of Redwing, MN.

(Second place was Derek Wallen of Apple Valley, MN, Third was Andrew Brown of St. Paul, MN)

The winner of the 35k for the Women was Angie Robinson of Roseville.
