Pine County Sheriff Warns About Phone Scam

Friday, February 11th, 2011 at 7:17 am

Pine County Sheriff Robin Cole is warning local area residents that a scam is being perpetuated using the phone number of Pine County Chief Deputy Steve Blackwell.

Cole says scammers are calling Pine County and telling them they have won money in a Publishers Clearinghouse contest, which isn’t true. It is at this time that the scammers tell their victims that they need to send in money to claim their prize.

In addition to using Blackwell’s number, the scam artists have also claimed to be members of the FBI and other federal agencies.

In a press release, Cole urges residents not to give personal or confidential information over the phone, especially information such as bank account numbers and social security numbers.
