A sergeant with the Superior Police Department was arrested Sunday after his girlfriend accused him of punching her in the face.

Daniel Hawkin II, 43, of Duluth has been charged with fifth-degree domestic assault, a misdemeanor, and is being held in the Carlton County Jail until his initial court appearance today.  Hawkin’s 32-year-old girlfriend told authorities the incident happened on I-35 between Cloquet and Scanlon early Sunday morning.

WDIO of Duluth reports that Hawkin has been with the Superior Police Department for 19 years.  The department has placed Hawkin on paid administrative leave, which is required by law and department policy, pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.
