Large Deployment Of Brainerd Troops Coming In May

A large deployment of National Guard soldiers from the Brainerd area is in the works. The Brainerd Dispatch reports that Lt. Col. Brian Melton and Command Sgt. Maj. John Lepowsky will lead 600 soldiers headquartered in Brainerd on a year-long deployment to Kuwait in May.

The Minnesota National Guard is calling it the second largest deployment of Minnesota soldiers since World War II.

The soldiers headquartered in Brainerd are from the First Regiment, 194th Armor Combined Arms Battalion and they will be among 2,400 troops from across the state being called to duty by the First Brigade Combat Team, 34th Division in Bloomington.

The Dispatch also notes that the 2,400 soldiers will mobilize for a one-year deployment in support of Operation New Dawn on May 22. Operation New Dawn is the name of the U.S. drawdown phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The soldiers will provide base defense in Kuwait and perform route security operation in support of the U.S. forces throughout Iraq.
