Toddler Killed In Western Minnesota, 19-Year Old Man Arrested
A 19-year-old man is expected to be charged today in the death of a 19-month-old baby girl in western Minnesota.
Police say the baby, Tiana Moore, was assaulted last Wednesday by her mother’s boyfriend Sergio Turrubiates Jr in the town of Olivia in Renville County. The toddler was flown to St. Paul’s Childrens Hospital, and died on Christmas Eve.
Her family said when they saw her right after she was brought to a Renville County hospital, she had bruises up and down the entire right side of her body.
The toddler, Tiana, was found unresponsive in her family’s apartment in Olivia last Wednesday. Police said she had injuries so severe that she needed more urgent medical attention, and thus she was airlifted to St. Paul. She was flown to St. Paul Children’s Hospital.
Assistant Renville County Attorney Lawrence Stratton described the situation as “a tragic occurrence,” and Stratton plans to file criminal charges against the 19-year old boyfriend today.
A boyfriend of Tiana’s mother, he lived with them in their apartment. He spent the night in a Renville County jail last night for allegedly killing the little girl.
Friends told WCCO that Tiana was alone with the boyfriend that afternoon. They had seen him playing with other children before without any problems, so they don’t know what could have driven him to such an extreme as to hurt and kill Tiana.
