Good News: Holiday Season Begins With Strong Retail Sales

Monday, November 29th, 2010 at 6:20 am

The last few holiday shopping seasons have been a bit slow for retailers, posting lower than expected profits. But so far this year there is no shortage of sales and local stores are reaping the benefits.

Numbers are coming from Black Friday, as well as over the weekend, and retailers in Minnesota are smiling. This weekend holiday shoppers in Minneapolis pushed and shoved their way into stores for what experts are calling the best Black Friday they have seen in 15 years.

Of course today (Nov. 29) is becoming known as “Cyber Monday” – the first Monday after Thanksgiving – a day in which many retailers offer deep discounts for online purchases, and often offer free shipping on all items.

While the national unemployment rate still high and the recession woes lingering, the positive retail turnout is a good sign that things may be improving in our economy.
