PCHS Hosts Annual School District “Welcome Back” Breakfast

Friday, September 3rd, 2010 at 10:26 am

On Wednesday, Sept. 1 the Pine City High School hosted the annual “Welcome Back” breakfast as a kickoff to the 2010 school year. All local school teachers, administrators, custodial staff, and food service workers were in attendence for pancakes, french toast, sausage, rolls and milk.

Dave Arola, the grade school principal, told us that this event is one of the few times all year where all employees of the grade school and the high school are in attendance. Arola also said the schools are the largest employer in Pine City, and getting everyone together to start the year is a tradition.

The keynote speaker was Kent Pekel of the U of M’s College Readiness Consortium, and he spoke about insuring that all Minnesota Students be ready for college in 5 key areas:

1. Academic Readiness

2. Admissions Readiness

3. Career Readiness

4. Financial Readiness

5. Personal and Social Readiness

Pekel also outlined some scary trends worldwide that suggest America may no longer be leading the way when it comes to successful higher education. Pekel offered some solutions, but was raising awareness to a growing problem in the jump from high school graduate to 4-year college graduate. Listen to a portion of Pekel’s speech below, and contact the Consortium at 612-625-3695 for more information on ensuring college readiness.
