Plane Crash in Wright County Kills Two
A plane crash in Wright County has left two men dead. Authorities report that a fixed-wing, single engine plane flown by Brett Johnson of Becker was doing tricks in the sky on Sunday, Aug. 22 around 12.10 p.m. before plummeting unexpectedly into a grove of trees, and crashing in Clearwater Township. Also killed in the crash was Jeffrey Colbenson of Maple Lake.
WCCO of Minneapolis found witnesses who said the plane was doing loops and spins in the sky for several minutes, before the engine stalled. Crews responding to the crash site reported two people dead at the scene.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane is classified as being amateur built, but it’s believed the 32-year old Johnson, who was from Big Lake, was very experienced. The passenger has been identified as Jeffrey Colbenson (34), and a person at the scene told WCCO that he was set to be married this coming Saturday to a member of Maple Lake’s Volunteer fire department.
The two men apparently took off earlier from an airstrip in Clear Lake.
