Veteran Mora Cop Exonerated

A former Mora police officer has been cleared of allegations that he made terroristic threats against four city officials.

Steven Hoberg, a 16-year veteran of the Mora Police department, admitted to making a Craigslist post which depicted Mora Mayor Greg Ardner, City Councilpersons Dave Chemeil and Beth Hallin, and Mora City Administrator Joel Dhein as missing persons. The post had a tag-line that read: “Four people I’d like to see on a milk carton.”

Hoberg’s attorney’s intimated that the charges were being brought for political reasons, in this, an election season. The Kanabec County Times reported that Hoberg saw the posting as a “joke” and his lawyer further argued that his First Amendment rights of free speech were being violated.

Judge James Reuter didn’t comment about the issue of free speech, but the paper reports Reuter cited “insufficient probable cause to support the charges.”

Hoberg is now expected to return to his new job as a member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s Tribal Police Department.
