Man Drives Wrong Way on 35E, Dies in Bad Crash
A four-car crash left a wrong-way driver dead in the early hours of Thursday, Aug. 19th on 35 E in White Bear Lake, this according to the State Patrol.
Apparently the 23-year old driver got on the southbound side of the interstate at Maryland Ave in St. Paul, and drove his SUV north for several miles into oncoming traffic. The State Patrol received several calls about the driver, and WCCO of Minneapolis reports that troopers were attempting to get ahead of him to avoid any accidents.
Unfortunately officers could not do so, and the man, who was driving a Ford Escape, caused a significant collision with 3 other vehicles.
The man, who remains unidentified, was killed when he crashed head on into a truck being driven by Jason Haraldson of Forest Lake. Amazingly, Haraldson wasn’t killed, but WCCO reports he suffered “significant injuries to his legs” and was currently hospitalized.
Two other cars were also hit, one even rolled off the road, but the State Patrol is reporting those two drivers were uninjured. Escaping without injury were Travis Voight of North Branch and Maynard Matthes of Forest Lake.
The crash caused a major traffic problem throughout the morning commute, but all roads were reopened within a few hours.
