Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 5:34 pm

The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning as well as a Tornado Watch for the following Counties: Warnings:  Anoka, Benton, Chippewa, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pine, Redwood, Renville, Sherburne, Stearns, Wright, and Yellow Medicine counties. Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 7pm, Tornado Watch in effect until 11pm tonight.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE DAMAGING WIND IN EXCESS OF 60 MILES PER HOUR… DESTRUCTIVE HAIL… DEADLY LIGHTNING… AND VERY HEAVY RAIN. FOR YOUR PROTECTION MOVE TO AN INTERIOR ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS. HEAVY RAINS FLOOD ROADS QUICKLY SO DO NOT DRIVE INTO AREAS WHERE WATER COVERS THE ROAD.

Remember that when a severe thunderstorm is issued:

  • Follow weather reports. Make sure a battery-powered radio is nearby.
  • Lightning can cause power surges. Unplug all appliances before the storm hits.
  • Avoid using the phone. Telephone lines can conduct electricity.
  • Metal pipes also conduct electricity. Stay away from faucets, sinks, and bathtubs
  • Close the blinds and shades of your windows, and keep away from them.
  • Leash or cage your pets.
