Gas Drive Off Leads to Police Chase, Accident

Polk County Sheriff’s Deputies were advised of a gas drive off from the Super America located on U.S. Hwy 8 in St. Croix Falls Township.

Deputies located the vehicle which was described as a maroon minivan with no plates. Deputies stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle who was identified as the Keith Ness of Somerset Wis.. While deputies were dealing with Ness on suspicion of driving under the influence, Ness Fled the scene in his vehicle.

Police followed Ness for about 1.5 miles when Ness loss control of his vehicle and left the roadway while trying to exit off of U.S. Hwy 8 onto 35 south.

When the vehicle left the roadway, it began to roll and Ness, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the car.

Ness was transported from the scene of the accident by helicopter to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment of severe injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriffs office and Wisconsin State Patrol.
