Pine Co. Looking to Expand Broadband Access

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 at 6:04 am

Pine County is considering ways to bring broadband internet access to all residents in the county.   The issue was discussed at Tuesday’s county board meeting.

Commissioner Steve Hallan says a recent meeting with local internet and phone service providers is the start of what he hopes is the expansion high speed access throughout the county.

The concern, says Hallan, is that there are patches throughout the county with no high speed accessibility which can hurt future business and residency.

Terryl Arola sits on the technology committee who is taking the lead on the effort in the county.  She and Pine County Coordinator Mark LeBrun say the next step is teaching the public why wide spread access is essential for the entire county.

Hallan told the board the technology committee will conduct a survey to see which county residents wants service who don’t currently have it.  The committee will also work on a map of where coverage is needed.

Hallan and Arola will join Red Rock Radio next week during the monthly Commissioner’s Report to discuss more about the effort to expand broadband access.

Broadband is so badly needed in this county. For a fact I can tell you we need and want in our area. We have a large daily farmer 1/2 mile from us and they run their daily farm on computer – getting broadband will speed up processes. We feel like second class citizens in this area – poor phone lines, not being able to have high speed is very disappointing. You can count this area in on wanting and needing broadband – Thank you, Thank you

I agree, High speed internet is needed and should be available for everyone. From experience, I homeschool all 5 of my children and currently use a dial up internet, using this has worked but adds to the stress of making sure that my kids are still getting the education they need and deserve. Having access to High speed internet would greatly improve those “slow internet” factors and allow for even more education to be brought into our school room. I know of other people around my area that also would love to see high speed internet available to them as well. This would be a definite improvement to many peoples lives. Thank you
