Heckel Appears in Court, Posts Bail

scottheckelScott Heckel made his first appearance in Pine County Court, Tuesday, for a New Year’s Day crash that killed two Pine City residents.

Heckel, 44, is charged with twelve counts in the case including six for criminal vehicular homicide and three for criminal vehicular operation causing bodily harm.

Conditional bail was set at $25,000.  According to court records, Heckel posted bail.  He is due back is court on June 29th.

Heckel was allegedly driving drunk on Highway 70 on January 1st. The accident report says he was driving a Chevy truck, passed a Dodge Caravan in a no passing zone at the crest of a hill and then struck an Oldsmobile Intrigue head-on.

The passengers of the Intrigue, Michael, 50, and Robin Moris, 48, of Pine City, were killed as a result of the collision.

According to the criminal complaint, a blood test taken after the crash determined Heckel’s Blood Alcohol Content as a .20, which is more the double the legal limit in Minnesota.

Heckel’s license was revoked at the time of the crash. He also has previous alcohol related revocations in 1999, 1990, 1989, 1985 and two in 1984.

The homicide charges each carry a maximum penalty of 10-years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine. The criminal vehicular operation charges are each punishable by one-year in prison and/or a $3,000 fine.
