HikersOne of the nation’s top professors is calling for the release of three American Hikers who are detained in Iran.  University of Princeton professor Cornel West released a statement Wednesday asking for the release of Sarah Shourd, Josh Fattal, and Shane Bauer, whose mother, Cindy Hickey, lives in Pine City.

“I plead to the Iranian government to release my innocent Sister and Brothers who only meant to do good,” said West in the statement.  “Let us not make them political pawns in the international conflict.  Please, please – let them go and come home to their loved ones.”

The Americans were arrested on July 31st, 2009 and have spoken to their families just ones since their arrest.

According to a report from Iran’s English-language Press, a top Iranian intelligence minister linked the three American hikers to U.S. Intelligence services.

The families of the Americans called the accusations “totally unfounded” and “ridiculous.”
