Pine County Deputy Awarded for Bravery, Swift Action
Pine County Deputy Chad Layon was recently awarded a Life-Saving Award from the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association for distinguishing himself by an act of personal bravery and self-sacrifice while saving the life of another.
On October 10th, 2009, Deputy Layon responded to a location on Nurse’s Road in Sandstone for a report of a male who had fallen out of a deer stand and was having difficulty breathing and bleeding from his nose and ears.
Deputy Layon arrived and found the victim who was lying on his back unconscious. Deputy Layon checked the victim and found him not breathing and no pulse. He immediately began CPR with the assistance of the victim’s son. A few minutes later Deputy Dan Kunz arrived and assisted Deputy Layon with CPR until EMS personnel arrived.
The victim was then transported to Pine Medical Center and later airlifted to Cambridge Medical Center. He is expected to make a full recovery after many months of rehabilitation.
