vonFormer Kanabec County Sheriff Von Thompson will stand trial in Anoka County starting Monday.  The former law enforcement official is charged with felony counts of exploiting over $172,000 from a 91-year-old Mora man between October of 2007 and May of 2008.   The criminal complaint states Thompson told the elderly man that he needed the money to buy a plane which he later intended to sell.

The trial is being held in Anoka County due to conflict of interest in Kanabec County.  The trial is expected to last two weeks, according to Kanabec County Court Administration.

Thompson also faces a petty misdemeanor charge for allegedly trying to steal sausages from a grocery story in Mora.  The value of the sausage is about $4.  He pleaded not guilty to the charge

If convicted, he could face 80 years in prison.

Thompson served as sheriff for 18 years, until 1999
