Former Sheriff Thompson Granted Continuance

vonFormer Kanabec County Sheriff Von Thompson received a continuance for arraignment on a petty misdemeanor charge for allegedly trying to steal sausages from a grocery story in Mora.

Thompson was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, but the new charges will now trail his his four felony counts of exploiting over $172,000 from a 91-year-old Mora man between October of 2007 and May of 2008.

The criminal complaint states Thompson told the elderly man that he needed the money to buy a plane which he later intended to sell.

If convicted, he could face 80 years in prison. Thompson served as sheriff for 18 years, until 1999.

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 2nd at 1:30 p.m. in Kanabec County.
