Local Impact of Withholding School Payments

Friday, January 29th, 2010 at 6:05 am

Earlier this week, Minnesota Management and Budget announced that the state is going to delay school aid payments in order to pay the state’s bills.

The state is withholding $1.5 million from Pine City schools says superintendent Dennis Fischer.

Fischer says because the school has built a $3.1 million fund balance they will not be forced to borrow.

According to numbers released Thursday by state Senator Rick Olseen’s office, $700,000 will be withheld from Rush City schools  and $4.2 million from Cambridge-Isanti schools.

Pine City schools do expect to receive the payments in May, said Fischer.

Fischer says he has spoken to local legislators about the law, and says they have said they plan on working on a repeal.

In a statement released Thursday, Olseen said, “Like, you, I’m deeply troubled about the state of Minnesota’s budget.  I will work for a long-term, balanced approach to restoring stability to our state’s finances.”

He added, “Though there is nothing I can do to prevent this current action being taken by the administration, I will work to repeal this law and ensure that we can prevent future payments from being withheld from our schools.”
