TIDY CAT WINNER
Army Specialist Nathan Davis of Petersburg, VA. won the Tidy Cats essay contest describing his cats with “Cats in Command.” : 0815 hours: “Sgt. Snog does weaving drills between my feet as I make coffee, and Cmdr. Frank stands guard at table, ready to rid world of stray bacon or toast bits.” The GI wins five-grand, a year’s worth of kitty litter, and role in a Web cast promoting Tidy Cats.

GAS ALARMS
A flatulent turtle named George has set off alarms at the Sea Life Center in Norfolk, England. Apparently the bubbles generated caused the water to trigger overflow sensors in the tank. They’ve lowered the water level in the tank. “It resulted in an aquarist having to dash to the center in the middle of the night. So by lowering the water tank level, we are taking no chances.”

GNOME MYSTERY SOLVED
A Mount Vernon, Wash. neighborhood had seen a rash of gnome nappings. Now the mystery has been solved after a wind storm. Lisa Soneda of Mount Vernon said her daughter told her this month the fence separating her back yard from that of her next-door neighbor had blown down to reveal an unusual sight. “I looked over the fence and I think the first thing I said was: ‘Holy crap!’” she said. “Lots and lots of gnomes,” Soneda said of the spectacle. “I counted like 46.” The actual count was 60, all taken from the yards of neighbors.. The woman who lived at the house has been charged with misdemeanor theft and the gnomes are headed home.

GRILLED CHEESE LOVE
The Melt Bar & Grilled in the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches in multiple variations. They’re offering a 25% discount to anyone who has a tattoo of the classic sandwich. The restaurant has hooked up for the promotion with Voodoo Monkey tattoo shop, which is offering its own discount on grilled cheese designs.

BAD CAREER MOVE
Phoneix music teacher Mary Segal took her students to a performance downtown the other day. Then she took them to lunch. At Hooters. The Paradise Valley school district spokeswoman Judi Willis says that wasn’t a good decision, so they’ve suspended the teacher. Ms. Segal said it was the only place that could accommodate a group of that size. But district officials believe there were other options for lunch in the area.

STARTING EARLY
A 4 year old Tennesee boy escaped from his home, broke into a neighbor’s house and stole their Christmas presents. Hayden Wright was found wandering the streets of his Chattanooga neighborhood while wearing a little girl’s dress and drinking a beer at 1:45 a.m. His mom, April Wright says: “He wants to get in trouble so he can go to jail because that’s where his daddy is.”
