New Era of Recycling Begins
Two new forms of recycling are now in Pine County. The “Message in the Bottle” and “It’s in the Bag” campaigns held a kickoff event at Tobies Restaurant in Hinckley. The programs are coordinated efforts with Minnesota Waste Wise, The Recycling Association of Minnesota and PHASE Recycling in Pine County.
“Message in the Bottle” uses bins that look like soda bottles to recycle plastic bottle. Bottles are set up at convenience stores and gas stations around the county.
Maggie Mattacola is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Recycling Association of Minnesota, who helped launch the Pine County “Message in the Bottle” Program. She describes the program.
The “It’s in the Bag” program is also underway in Pine County. Residents can bring their old plastic bags and deposit them into bins set up at locations around the county. PHASE will then come by and pick up the bags.
Matt Blaiser with Minnesota Waste Wise explains why the program is necessary.
PHASE director Tim Schmutzer says the efforts are already off to a fast start.
The programs are only in Hinckley and Sandstone but Schmutzer said there are plans to expand in the future. When “Message in the Bottle” and “It’s in the Bag” become county-wide efforts, PHASE anticipates they will create another 10 jobs for adults with disabilities.
