Judge: “I have never seen anyone with 32 prior warrants.”
A 31-year-old Sturgeon Lake man is in the Pine County Jail for a series of charges related to an alleged burglary on Sunday, and Judge Krista Martin says he is the first of his kind. William Hoffman was charged Tuesday with two counts of first degree burglary, one count of second degree burglary, false imprisonment, and gross misdemeanor domestic assault.
It is alleged that Hoffman locked his girlfriend in their residence and would not let her leave. The criminal complaint states that at one point she tried to jump out of a window to escape, but Hoffman dragged her back in and started assaulting her.
She was able to leave once a friend arrived, but Hoffman later went to the friend’s house where his girlfriend was staying and kicked the door down. He then assaulted her again, according to the complaint.
Hoffman has a previous criminal history which consists of five prior felony convictions, 12 misdemeanors, and two pending cases, including one in Carlton County for first degree controlled substances. He also has 32 prior warrants.
Conditional Bail was set at $50,000, which Hoffman said he would not be able to pay. Judge Martin said of setting the bail “I have never seen anyone with 32 prior warrants,” adding “I have no confidence you will return to court.”
Hoffman is due back in court November 24th.
The first degree burglary charges carry a penalty of 20 years in prsion and/or a $35,000 fine. Second degree burglary is punishable by up to ten years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine.
