Bauer and Hikers Accused of Espionage
A day after the Pine City community rallied around the family of Shane Bauer at a vigil in Robinson Park, reports have surfaced from Iran that the Minnesota native and his friend’s Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal are being charged with espionage.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Monday that the Americans are innocent.
The three Americans have been detained in Iran since July 31st. Sunday marked the 100-day anniversary of their detention, and in a show of support, vigils were held across the country including in Pine City. The families of the three say they crossed the Iranian border on accident while on a hiking trip in Iraq.
Bauer’s mother Cindy Hickey lives in Pine City and his sisters attended Pine City high school. Hickey declined to comment on the recent accusations, but tells Red Rock Radio the families do plan on releasing a statement.
Hickey and Shane’s sister Nicole Lindstrom spoke at Sunday’s vigil about the local support.
