Pine City Man Sentenced for Assault of Infant Son
A Pine City father is heading to jail for assaulting his infant son in March. David Kurth, 31, was sentenced earlier this month and reported to the Pine County jail Tuesday for third degree assault.
According to the criminal complaint, Kurth told police he was frustrated and threw his son on the couch. His son’s head hit a wooden brace under the couch cushions resulting in a skull fracture and bleeding of the brain.
Initially, Kurth told police his son had fallen off the couch while he went to retrieve a diaper. However, doctors at the University of Minnesota hospital said that explanation did not fit the severity of the child’s injuries. Doctors said the portion of the skull that was fractured does not fracture often and would need considerable force to injure.
Kurth was sentenced to 10 days in jail, 200 hours of community service, and five years probabtion for the charge.
