Design Team Arrives in Pine City

The Pine City of today looks different than it did in 1982, the last time the Minnesota Design Team came to town. The group is back this weekend and those like Mayor Jane Robbins hope their visit will spark some of the same positive changes as it did 27 years ago.

The Design Team is a group of 20 volunteer professionals from various disciplines including architecture, landscape architecture, and urban and city planning. The group helps outline ideas, plans, and strategies for future development in the city. Neil Reardon is one of the co-leaders of the design team. He thinks this is an opportunity to enhance Pine City

Pine City is the only city in the state where the design team will visit this year. The city after submitting an application and a pre-selection visit from the design team. Mary Kay Sloan is on the Pine City Planning Commission and was instrumental in bringing the design team to the city. She says there are specific issues she hopes their visit will address

The design team and community leaders met Thursday at Chris and Cheryl McHugh’s home. Design team members met with the families who will host them this weekend. However, there is little down time planned during the busy next few days.
Sloan encourages the public to come out to one of a number of events with the design team this weekend. A community dinner and conversation will take place at the Pine City Elementary multi-purpose room on Friday and Saturday the Design Team will talk about their vision for Pine City at a presentation at the Pine City Elementary Auditorium at 7 p.m. Sloan hopes all residents will attend and become part of the process.
