Local Projects Awarded Grants

The Initiative Foundation announced that it has awarded 14 community grants totaling $52,500.  The following organizations were selected as grant recipients:

Big Pine Lakes Association, Finlayson; Strawberry Creek Spawning Habitat Restoration ($5,000) – to enable restoration of walleye spawning habitat along Strawberry Creek.

Cass County, Walker; Wabedo Lake Chain Wastewater Inspections ($5,000) – to provide certified inspections and possible loans for replacing or upgrading older septic systems in order to protect public health and water quality.

Central Lakes College, Brainerd; Lakes Area Human Resources Association ($1,000) – to hold a planning session in order to identify goals and opportunities related to the needs of human resource professionals.

Central Minnesota Community Foundation, St. Cloud; Nonprofit Day “You Get What You Measure” ($1,000) – to assist area nonprofit organizations in a workshop that will help clarify and re-frame internal goals and results in order to provide improved services and programs.

Milaca Public Schools; Inside-Out Connections Coalition ($2,500) – to strengthen a community team that will advocate for and address the needs of children with incarcerated parents.

Minnesota Fathers & Families Network, St. Paul; Professional Development Training ($1,500) – to support a workshop and annual conference designed to increase father and other male involvement in the lives of young children, particularly those facing high social and economic risk factors.

Northland Area Family Service Center, Longville; “A Second Chance” Thrift Store ($5,000) – to support initial operations of a charitable thrift store that will provide training to area high school students and whose revenue will support programs for children and families in need.

Onanegozie RC&D Council, Mora; Lake & River Association Roundtable ($1,000) – to convene lake and river association leaders from throughout east central Minnesota to share successful strategies and citizen-based projects.

Tusen Tack, Braham; Braham Area Community Center Feasibility Study ($5,000) – to conduct a feasibility study and planning efforts for a potential community center.

United Way of Central Minnesota, St. Cloud; Greater St. Cloud Early Childhood Coalition ($11,000) – to continue early childhood coalition projects that promote a healthy start for our youngest children and their families in the Greater St. Cloud area.

United Way of Crow Wing & Southern Cass Counties, Brainerd; Brainerd Lakes Area Youth as Resources ($5,000) –  for renewed support of an intergenerational leadership program that funds youth community service projects.

West Central Initiative, Fergus Falls; Partners Investing in Nursing’s Future ($5,000) – to provide specialized training and support in order to find employment for senior-care nurses.  Contact: Nancy Straw, (218) 739-2239.

Windustry, Minneapolis; CURA CAP Student ($1,500) – to evaluate processes for wind project permitting and the economic impact of existing projects.

Wright County Economic Development Partnership, Rockford; Wright County Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Application ($3,000) – to participate in a program designed to guide the growth of a region by helping to create jobs, foster more stable and diversified economies and improve living conditions.

In partnership with other lenders, the Initiative Foundation provides business financing to promote local ownership and secure quality jobs.  The following businesses were recently selected as loan recipients:

Monitor Tire Disposal, Inc., St. Martin – to finance the expansion of a waste tire shredding company.

Paul’s Fireplace Wood, Inc., Little Falls – to finance the expansion of a wood supplier to area restaurants and businesses.
