Local Business Facing Civil Rights Lawsuit

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 at 5:20 am

According to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, a former employee at Product Fabricators in Pine City is suing the business for civil rights violations.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit Monday alleging that the Pine City business fired Pine City resident Dennis Anderson because he was taking a low dosage of prescribed Vicodin.  Anderson takes the medication for back pain.

According to the Star Tribune report, the EEOC said Product Fabricator believed the Vicodin made him unfit for work.

Product Fabrictors also is said to have required employees to disclose any prescrition medication they are taking, which the EEOC says is a violation of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

Red Rock Radio contacted Product Fabricators, but they declined to comment on the story.

I think it’s great that someone is finally going after Product Fab–they’ve had shifty hiring and firing practices for years. At one point they “laid off” all their higher paid employees only to replace them with low paid temps. The lay off happened a few days into a new month, and the employees were advised that their health insurance was cut off as of the last day of the previous month. I wish someone could go after them for that as well.
