Preparing for Disaster

Monday, August 3rd, 2009 at 9:49 am

Tornadoes, floods, flu outbreaks and many other disasters can leave a community in ruins.  Monday, a group meeting in Sandstone is trying to make sure that does not happen to Pine County.

The Faith-Based Disaster Preparedness Steering Committee will convene at the Evangelical Free Church to come up with plans in case of a community-wide emergency situation.

Pauline Amundson is the Public Health Preparedness Coordinator for Pine County.  She says having the help of local churches is an effective way to handle a disaster.

Amundson says the local effort is a result of  a recommendation from the National Government who is encouraging communities to become better prepared after events like 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina.

Amundson adds while the churches work on their plans, there are other county plans in place right now.
