*Update* Pine City Mayor: “Thoughts and Prayers” with Family of Missing Hiker
Pine City Mayor Jane Robbins says the thoughts and prayers of the entire Pine City community are with the family of Shane Bauer. Bauer is one of three Americans who went missing in Iran, Friday, during a hiking trip. His mother, Cindy Hickey, lives in Pine City. She told the Associated Press that she is concerned for the safety of her son and the two others.
Bauer, who is a freelance journalist and photographer, went missing after accidentally crossing the Iranian border, according to Kurdish officials.
Bauer is a native of Minnesota. He is fluent in Arabic and has spent most of the past six years working in the Middle East and North Africa. Bauer’s work has been published in the L.A. Times, San Francisco Chronicles, and other papers abroad.
The other hikers are identified as Joshua Fattal and Sarah Shourd.
Television outlets in Iran confirmed Tuesday that Bauer and the two others are being held and interrogated by Iranian officials.
Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on the Iranian Government to disclose where the three Americans are being held.
The Pine City community was left with a similar feeling of shock a year ago by the death of firefighter Jeremy Jylka. Jylka died while responding to a grass fire. Robbins says she believes the community will rally around Bauer’s family just as they did the Jylkas.
Robbins says that she does not know Shane Bauer, but does know the family through the work they do within the Pine City Community.
