*Update* Missing Hiker in Iran with Ties to Pine City

One of three American hikers who went missing in Iran has ties to Pine City.  Shane Bauer’s mother Cindy Hickey, who lives in Pine City, tells the Associated Press that she is concerned for her son’s safety.

Bauer, who is a freelance journalist and photographer, went missing after accidentally entering the Middle East country, according to Kurdish officials.  Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton addressed the issue.

Bauer is a native of Minnesota. A second hiker is identified as Joshua Fattal of Pennsylvania. The third has not been identified.  Bauer is fluent is Arabic and has spent most of the past six years working in the Middle East and North Africa.  His work has been published in the L.A. Times, San Francisco Chronicles, and other papers abroad.

Staff at Pine City High School tells Red Rock Radio that two of Bauer’s sisters graduated from the school in 2002 and 2004.
