Man Arrested in North Branch for Assaulting Pregnant Girlfriend
A 21-year-old Stacy resident faces two counts of felony domestic assault and one count of domestic assault by strangulation. Cory Rawls made his first appearance in Chisago County Court Wednesday morning. He was arrested Tuesday in North Branch. According to the criminal complaint, Rawls assaulted his pregnant girlfriend on multiple occasions.
On Sunday, July 6th, the two engaged in a verbal argument which resulted in Rawls bear hugging the victim, named as N.L.H in the criminal complaint. His girlfriend, who is four months pregnant, claims the squeezing caused pain. Rawls then allegedly slammed her head against a vehicle window and held her neck area with his arm, cutting off her ability to breath. The complaint further states that Rawls twisted her left breast and told her “he would kill her and the baby if [she] did not cooperate with him.”
Rawls was arrested at his mother’s home in North Branch. He admitted to picking up his girlfriend in a bear hug, but denied causing injury. He did admit to an argument on Tuesday where he struck her in the knee.
The complaint also states that he pushed her into a crib and gave her a black eye when she was two months pregnant.
Both felony domestic assault charges carry a maximum penalty in five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. The count of domestic assault by strangulation is punishable by three years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
