Unemployment in Burnett County is down a percent-and-a-half from April, according to numbers released Wednesday by the Department of Workforce Development. May’s rate in Burnett is 10.5-percent, which is down from 12-percent a month prior. The northwest Wisconsin county now ranks 11th in the state for unemployment rate, which is down from ninth in April.
Polk County now ranks 20th, down six spots from 14th last month. Polk county’s rate dropped from 11.2 percent to 9.9-percent in May.
“We are encouraged to see rates improve in many counties and a number of metro areas,” Secretary Gassman said. “Even so, the global recession challenges many communities. Under Governor Doyle’s leadership, we are using all the resources at our disposal to provide employment and training services to workers, connect them with employers, and get the economy moving forward.”
