More Accusations Against Former Sheriff, Thompson
Former Kanabec County Sheriff Von Thompson might face more charges for allegedly running a ponzi scheme and encouraging people to invest in planes, according to a report from KARE11-TV.
A search warrant issued this week in Hennepin County says Thompson swindled thousands of dollars out of several victims. According to KARE-11’s report, the former sheriff used the money to pay-off debts.
Thompson is already charged with four felony counts of exploiting over $172,000 from a 91-year-old Mora man between October of 2007 and May of 2008. The criminal complaint states Thompson told the elderly man that he needed the money to buy a plane which he later intended to sell.
If convicted, he could face 80 years in prison. Thompson served as sheriff for 18 years, until 1999.
