WI Preparing for Fishing Opener

The Wisconsin Fishing Opener is Saturday.  It is the 44th Annual Governor’s Opener.  Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle is heading to Hayward on Saturday to cast the first line of the season.  He will be on the waters of Chippewa Flowage.

Governor Warren Knowles started the “Opener” in 1965.  It is held every year on the first Saturday of May at various locations in western and northern Wisconsin.

Wisconsin is home to 165 fish species and 15,000 inland lakes. Over 1.4 million fishing licenses are sold in the state each year.
