*Update* Grantsburg Plane Crash Victim Identified

The Burnett County Sheriff’s Department tells Red Rock Radio, Michael Schute, 48, of Grantsburg is the victim of a plane crash south of Grantsburg near County Road O and East River Road. Schute was the pilot and only person in the plane.
The accident happened just after 1:30 p.m.
Burnett County Sheriff Dean Roland told Red Rock Radio, “something was wrong with the engine. The witness heard the engine sputtering, missing, and then looked up and saw the plane, saw it was in distress, and saw it crash into the ground.”

The plane is an experimental, one-seater. Roland said the plane was very small, similar in size to a Volkswagen car. Sheriff Roland said the pilot was “quite experienced. He built and rebuilt planes.”
Schute died on impact. The remains have been removed from the scene.
The plane landed in a set of trees about 20 yards from the East River Road. The Grantsburg Fire Department and Department of Natural Resources put of the fire.
Roland says there is no residential damage, but three-quarters of an acre did burn.
The Federal Aviation Administration is scheduled to conduct an investigation.
