PCHS concert will feature nationally recognized trumpeter
The Pops Concerts presented by Pine City High School music students are always a highlight of the year for area residents, and this year’s band program offers some exciting features that are not to be missed.
A highlight of the concert will be a performance by national recognized trumpeter and composer Dr. Steve Wright. Wright will be performing a brand new arrangement of the 1960s classic, “Days of Wine and Roses” alongside the Pine City Concert Band. Wright will also be spending a day in Pine City working with students in a series of rehearsals, master classes, and private lessons.
Wright is a nationally recognized trumpet and flugelhorn soloist, as well as a composer-arranger of hundreds of works. After graduating from the University of Iowa, his professional career began in 1968 as a jazz/lead trumpet player with the U.S. Air Force Jazz Ensemble, the Airmen of Note. As a trumpeter, Steve Wright has played in everything from the Minnesota Orchestra to recording tracks for Motown Records and has played lead trumpet for such stars as Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Peggy Lee.
Wright has also composed and arranged dozens of jazz ensemble arrangements and compositions. His most recent work, an arrangement of the 1960s classic “Days of Wine and Roses,” is written for band and solo trumpet, and premiered in February.
Dr. Wright is an Associate Professor of Jazz Ensembles, Trumpet and Arranging at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota and is in his 19th year of teaching at the school.
The Senior High Band Pops Concert is Monday, May 4 at 7:
30 p.m. in the Elementary Auditorium. As always, admission is free. The appearance by Dr. Wright is sponsored in part by Accent Musical Instruments and Eckroth Music.
