Pine City Wal-Mart Targeted in Scam

A 21-year-old Rochester woman is in custody for trying to scam thousands of dollars out of Wal-Mart stores, including the one in Pine City.

KAAL-TV reports Austin Police arrested Ashley Smith of Rochester Tuesday at the Wal-Mart in Austin.   Smith was allegedly trying to return roughly $2,000 of merchandise that she bought with a bad check at a Wal-Mart in Sauk Centre.

Investigators believe smith targeted eight stores in Minnesota and several others in Northern Iowa.  Authorities believe up to $50,000 is involved.
