Girls Hoops Fighting Against Cancer

Kay Yow, Former NCSU Women's Basketball Coach
The Pine City Dragons girls basketball team will have to fight hard for a win against Mora on the hardwood, Friday, but it pales in comparison to the fight over 10-million people in the United States battle everyday, the fight against cancer. At tonight’s game in Pine City, fans will wear pink t-shirts and the Dragons’ players will wear pink shoelaces in support of cancer research and awareness.
Pine City Head Coach, Nathan Stoa, said Friday’s events are something the team has wanted to do all season. The recent passing of former North Carolina State Women’s Basketball coach, Kay Yow, is further inspiration for the Pine City team to rally around the cause.

Yow passed away January 24th after an over 20-year battle with breast cancer. In 2007, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the V Foundation for Cancer Research instituted the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

All the money raised from the shirts sold for Friday’s game will go to the WBCA. Stoa said, as of Friday morning, the school sold roughly 290 shirts for $10 each. Shirts will also be sold at the game, which begins at 7:30 p.m.
