Chisago County Sheriff, Todd Rivard, gave a 30-minute presentation, Tuesday, at the Rush City High School Auditorium regarding a proposed new jail in Chisago County. Rivard says overcrowding and deficiencies in the current facility make moving forward with a new jail a top priority.

Rivard and the sheriff’s department are proposing an over $32-million project that includes 217 beds, which is 150 beds more than the current jail. The problem, says Chisago County Commissioner, Ben Montzka, is the timing.

Rivard disagrees, and says the longer the county waits to build a new facility, the more it will cost in the long run.

The sheriff’s department will hold one more public open house on the project in Lindstrom next week. They hope to bring final plans to the county board by late November or early December.
