[Update] *Breaking News* Two Pine City Residents Killed in SD Crash
Two Pine City residents were killed Wednesday afternoon in a two vehicle accident in South Dakota. Lonnie Johnson, 86, of Pine Shores Drive and Marilyn Broz, 80, were pronounced dead at the scene at U.S Highway 212, in Deuel County, 27 miles east of Watertown, SD.
Accordng to the report from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Lonnie Johnson was driving a 1998 Buick Park Avenue traveling west on U.S Highway 212. The vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane into the path of a 2007 Volvo TT driven by Marlin Fenner of Milbank, South Dakota. Fenner was traveling east on US Highway 212 and attempted to avoid the crash by driving into the south ditch. Johnson collided with the rear portion of Fenner’s trailer, whihc rolled onto its side in the south ditch.
Marilyn Broz was the passenger in Johnson’s vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Lonnie Johnson, was transported to Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown and later died from his injuries. His wife, Shirley Johnson, 84, of Pine City, was the second passenger in the Buick. She was transported to Prairie Lakes Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Marlin Fenner was transported to the Milbank Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The following departments assisted at the scene: Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, Deuel County Emergency Management, Deuel County Ambulance,Gary Fire Department, Clear Lake Fire Department, Marietta (MN) Ambulence & Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol.
The accident occurred around 1:50 p.m.
The Johnsons married in 1943. They owned a local family farm and raised eight children.
